Tanzania Rejects Calls to Extend SIM Card Cut-Off Deadline

The Tanzanian government has ruled out requests to extend the date for SIM card registration beyond the July 10th deadline.

The Deputy Minister for Science and Technology, January Makamba said that all unregistered SIM cards will be disabled on the 10th of July as planned.

He accepted though that the registration process was not complete and there were a still a large number of unregistered SIM Cards in use.

As with a number of countries that have mandated the registration of SIM Cards, one of the major problems affecting the process has been the lack of identification documents held by the users.

The country has been registering SIM cards since late 2009 and had repeatedly extended the final cut-off deadline for the unregistered cards.
